We just heard from the Book of Numbers: Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them: This is how you shall bless the Israelites and I will bless them…: The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! I once met a Jewish scholar who was a descendent of Aaron, in other words he was in the hereditary line of priests going back to Moses’ brother. On the Holy Days every year he was asked to bless the congregation of his synagogue using these very words. And how appropriate it is for us to hear them today on this World Day of Peace. Today, as we begin the new year, the church celebrates this day in honor of the Mother of God, who is also a descendant of Aaron, and who has blessed the world by bringing Jesus Christ into it. It is fitting to honor such a Mother at the beginning of the year. Mothers are necessary for the beginning of our lives and Mary was particularly necessary for the birth of Jesus Christ. The Gospel we heard today is a continuation of the Christmas Gospel, giving us the response of the Shepherds to the good news of Jesus’ birth. They were the very first to know this good news. And we hear these telling words about Mary: Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.
