Monastic Wisdom and the Pandemic:
Abbot President Christopher Jamison-
This past spring, Christopher Jamison, Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation, teamed up with British production company CTVC to create an online platform addressing concerns stemming from the pandemic. In "Alone [Together]," Abbot Jamison discerns within the monastic tradition tools that may prove helpful to those trying to cope with the adaptations imposed by the pandemic. In presenting this wisdom, he has drawn on a range of sources, both from within the Christian monastic tradition and from a range of other perspectives.

Portsmouth Institute Lenten Series Begins

With its in-person dimension impacted by the pandemic, the Portsmouth Institute remains active in producing a rich array of publications and online presentations. The Institute invites all to join Prior Michael Brunner for a weekly series of Lenten reflections, beginning this Sunday. Videos will be released on each Sunday of Lent beginning on February 21st through Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion, March 28th.

The Calefactory

This week's "monastic wisdom" turns to a website offering helpful ideas and strategies to make it through the trying times of the pandemic. An additional simple suggestion: find a nice, warm spot to relax. In fact, the Benedictine tradition embraces this concept fully, in the time-honored availability of a "calefactory." This medieval term subsists in modern monastic life, carrying warm connotations.

Not Weighing Our Merits“Not weighing our merits…” This phrase resonated within me in the eucharistic prayer this morning. This is our request of God at the altar: please do not weigh our merits. The mistake, then: making Lenten efforts, or any act of piety or devotion, about gaining merit. …And yet, what of the right and righteous Lenten pursuit of worthiness: “…that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ,” as the Angelus concludes?
